Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 18 - Verse 32

18:32
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

Meaning

This verse from 2 Kings 18:32-33 illustrates a warning from the Assyrian king's representative to the people of Judah. The representative is trying to persuade them not to trust King Hezekiah's promise that the Lord will deliver them. Instead, he offers them false hope by describing a land that is prosperous and abundant, similar to their own. The Assyrian's intention is to lure them away from their faith and dependence on God to save them. The land of corn and wine, bread and vineyards, olive oil, and honey is depicted as a desirable place where they can live and thrive. This verse serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us not to be swayed by empty promises and false hope, but to remain steadfast in our trust in God's deliverance.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the phrase "a land like your own land" is significant in theological interpretation as it portrays a promise of comfort and familiarity to the people of Israel. By mentioning agricultural elements such as corn, wine, bread, vineyards, olive oil, and honey, the verse illustrates a bountiful and prosperous land that will sustain and enrich the lives of the Israelites. The mention of these specific commodities also alludes to the idea of abundance and God's provision for His people. Furthermore, the warning not to heed Hezekiah's persuasion serves as a caution against relying on human assurances or strategies instead of trusting in the deliverance of the Lord. This verse highlights the theme of divine providence and the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God's will, even in the face of worldly temptations or alternative solutions.

American Standard Version

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive-trees and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us.
