Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 17 - Verse 4

17:4
And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.

Meaning

In this verse, we see the consequences faced by Hoshea, the king of Israel, as a result of his actions. The king of Assyria, upon finding out that Hoshea had conspired against him by seeking help from the king of Egypt without providing tribute as customary, decided to take action. Hoshea had failed to uphold the annual tradition of paying tribute to the king of Assyria, and as a result, the king of Assyria saw this as a breach of trust and an act of rebellion. Consequently, the king of Assyria captured Hoshea, put him in prison, and bound him. This serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring commitments and obligations, as well as the repercussions of going against alliances and agreements. It also highlights the volatile nature of political relationships during this time period, where alliances could easily shift and betrayal was met with severe consequences.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse in 2 Kings 17:4 reveals the consequences of Hoshea, the king of Israel, seeking help from Egypt instead of trusting in God. The passage highlights the king's lack of faithfulness to the Lord by turning to a foreign power for support and failing to pay tribute to the king of Assyria. The king of Assyria's response to Hoshea's actions demonstrates the swift judgment and punishment that can come from disobeying God's commands. The imprisonment of Hoshea serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing one's trust in earthly powers rather than in the Almighty. This verse emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful to God and seeking His guidance in all circumstances, rather than relying on human alliances or worldly solutions.
