Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 17 - Verse 17

17:17
And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Meaning

This verse from the book of 2 Kings describes the actions of the people of Judah who turned away from the worship of the Lord and instead engaged in various forms of idolatry and witchcraft. The act of passing their children through the fire was part of a sacrificial ritual associated with the worship of pagan gods, where children were burned alive as an offering. In addition to this horrific practice, the people also used divination and enchantments, seeking guidance from false sources rather than turning to God. Furthermore, they sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, indicating a complete abandonment of their faith and moral standards. These actions were done intentionally to provoke God to anger, going against His commandments and dishonoring His name. This passage serves as a warning about the dangers of turning away from God and engaging in sinful practices that lead to spiritual destruction.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the act of causing sons and daughters to pass through the fire refers to a horrific practice known as child sacrifice. Not only was this an act of utmost evil, but it also showed the depths of depravity to which these individuals had sunk. The mention of divination and enchantments highlights the fact that they turned to pagan practices to seek guidance and power instead of relying on the one true God. By selling themselves to do evil, they were essentially giving up their moral autonomy and choosing to follow the path of wickedness. This verse serves as a stark warning against engaging in practices that go against the will of God and provoke his righteous anger. It reminds us of the importance of following God's commands and living according to his word, rather than giving in to the temptations of the world.
