Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 14 - Verse 14

14:14
And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

Meaning

This verse comes from the book of 2 Kings in the Old Testament and describes a military campaign led by the Assyrian king against the Kingdom of Judah. The Assyrian king invaded Judah, looted the treasures of the temple of the LORD, the king's house, and took hostages back to Samaria. The verse portrays the ruthlessness and brutality of the Assyrian conquest, as they not only stole material wealth but also took captives as a form of subjugation and control. The looting of the temples and royal treasuries was a common practice in ancient warfare, intended to weaken the conquered nation and enrich the conqueror. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of military aggression and the importance of protecting sacred places and cultural heritage. It also highlights the power dynamics between nations in ancient times, where the strong would exploit the weak for their own gain.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a significant event taking place where all the gold, silver, and vessels found in the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house were taken by a certain individual and returned to Samaria. Furthermore, a word study on the term "hostages" in this context can shed light on the power dynamics and relationships involved in this scenario, as well as the significance of honoring agreements and obligations.
