Book of 2 Kings - Chapter 12 - Verse 18

12:18
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

Meaning

This verse from 2 Kings 12:18 tells the story of Jehoash, the king of Judah, who took all the hallowed items that his ancestors had dedicated, including gold from the treasures of the house of the Lord and the king's house, and sent them to Hazael, the king of Syria. This act of sending treasures to Syria was a desperate attempt by Jehoash to seek peace and protection from the powerful neighboring kingdom. Unfortunately, this decision ultimately weakened Judah's economy and led to its eventual downfall. It serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of placing trust in worldly powers rather than in God. The verse underscores the consequences of turning away from God's protection and guidance in times of trouble, highlighting the importance of faith and obedience in the face of adversity.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse could be that it shows a departure from trust in God to reliance on human alliances. By sending hallowed things and treasures to the king of Syria, Jehoash of Judah was seeking protection and security through a political alliance rather than trusting in the Lord for deliverance. This action may reflect a lack of faith in God's ability to protect and provide for His people, as well as a departure from the covenantal relationship between God and the nation of Judah. Additionally, this verse highlights the dangers of placing trust in earthly powers and treasures instead of relying on the sovereignty and faithfulness of God.
