Book of 2 Corinthians - Chapter 9 - Verse 6

9:6
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Meaning

The verse "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." encourages believers to consider the principle of sowing and reaping in their lives. It emphasizes the concept that the amount of effort and resources one puts into their actions will directly correlate to the results they experience. By sowing sparingly, one will receive a limited harvest, but by sowing bountifully, one will receive a plentiful harvest. This verse serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, both positive and negative, and that we have the power to influence the outcomes through the choices we make. It encourages believers to be generous, diligent, and intentional in their efforts, knowing that they will ultimately reap what they sow.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the verse 'But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully' emphasizes the concept of sowing and reaping in the context of giving. In this verse, the Apostle Paul is highlighting the principle that the amount we give or sow will directly impact the amount we receive or reap in return. This is not only a financial principle but also applies to our actions, attitudes, and relationships. By sowing generously, we can expect to reap generously in all aspects of our lives. This verse challenges believers to give freely and abundantly, trusting in God's promise of a bountiful harvest. Word studies on 'soweth sparingly' and 'soweth bountifully' reveal that the Greek word for 'sparingly' can also be translated as 'with a grudge' or 'reluctantly,' while 'bountifully' can mean 'cheerfully' or 'generously.' This sheds further light on the importance of giving with a joyful heart and a spirit of generosity, knowing that God will reward us accordingly.

American Standard Version
