Book of 2 Corinthians - Chapter 7 - Verse 10

7:10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Meaning

Unpacking the deep meaning of this verse, it is clear that there are two distinct types of sorrow mentioned: godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. The verse highlights the fact that godly sorrow leads to repentance, which in turn leads to salvation that is secure and unwavering. This kind of sorrow is rooted in genuine remorse for sin and a desire to turn away from it. On the other hand, worldly sorrow is superficial and leads to spiritual death. This type of sorrow is often temporary, self-centered, and lacks true repentance. It focuses on the consequences of sin rather than the sin itself. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of sincere repentance and the transformation it brings. It encourages a shift in perspective from worldly sorrow to godly sorrow, which ultimately leads to a lasting and meaningful salvation not to be regretted.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the contrast between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. Godly sorrow leads to repentance, which in turn leads to salvation. This type of sorrow is genuine and comes from a deep realization of one's sinfulness before God. It is a sorrow that leads to a turning away from sin and a desire to live in obedience to God. On the other hand, the sorrow of the world leads to death. The sorrow of the world is superficial and often motivated by self-pity or regret for getting caught in sin. It does not lead to a true change of heart or a desire to live in accordance with God's will. Through this verse, we are reminded of the importance of heartfelt repentance and turning towards God, rather than being consumed by worldly sorrow which ultimately brings spiritual death.

American Standard Version
