Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 8 - Verse 8

8:8
But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day.

Meaning

In this verse, Solomon is referencing the descendants of the original inhabitants of the land who were not completely driven out by the children of Israel. These people were allowed to remain in the land, but they were made to pay tribute to the Israelites as a form of acknowledgment of the Israelites' dominion over the land. This practice of making the remaining inhabitants pay tribute was a common practice in ancient times and served as a way for the ruling kingdom to exert control over the conquered peoples. By making these descendants pay tribute, Solomon was able to ensure their loyalty and also benefit financially from their presence in the land. This verse highlights Solomon's political savvy and his ability to maintain control over his kingdom through strategic alliances and power dynamics.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Solomon is making the remaining descendants of the people in the land who were not destroyed by Israel pay tribute. This act has theological implications as it highlights the consequences of disobedience and the responsibilities of the nations towards God's chosen people. The word 'tribute' in this context can be further explored to understand the significance of this practice in ancient times. Tribute was a form of payment made by a subjugated people to a dominant power, symbolizing their submission and recognition of the authority of the ruling entity. By imposing tribute on these people, Solomon asserts his power and control over them, emphasizing the importance of obedience to God's chosen king. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the sovereignty of God's chosen leaders in executing His will.
