Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 33 - Verse 17

33:17
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.

Meaning

Despite the prohibition against sacrificing in high places in the ancient Israelite society, there were still individuals who continued to do so. However, the key distinction here is that these people were specifically sacrificing to the LORD their God, as opposed to other deities. This verse highlights the ongoing struggle within the Israelite community to adhere to the laws and customs set forth in the Bible. It also emphasizes the importance of intention and devotion in religious practices. By sacrificing only to the LORD, even if it was done in a manner that was not technically allowed, these individuals were expressing their loyalty and faithfulness to their God. This verse serves as a reminder that religious observance is not always black and white, and that sincerity of heart is a significant factor in one's relationship with the divine.

Theological Overview

When analyzing the theological interpretation of the verse 'Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only,' it is essential to consider the historical context in which it was written. During the time this verse was written, the worship of the Israelites was characterized by the offering of sacrifices in high places, which were often associated with Canaanite practices. Despite this, the verse acknowledges that the people continued to offer sacrifices to the Lord, indicating their attempt to worship and honor God, albeit in a manner that was not entirely aligned with the prescribed rituals. This verse highlights the tension between the people's desire to worship the one true God and the influence of pagan practices. Additionally, a word study of the phrase 'high places' reveals that these were elevated locations where sacrifices were commonly offered, emphasizing the significance of sacrifice in the religious practices of the Israelites.
