Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 28 - Verse 27

28:27
And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

Meaning

After the death of King Ahaz, he was buried in the city of Jerusalem, like his fathers before him. However, unlike the kings of Israel, he was not buried in the sepulchres of the kings. This suggests that Ahaz was not considered to be a righteous or worthy king in the eyes of the people. Instead, his son Hezekiah ascended to the throne after him. Hezekiah was known for his faithfulness to God and his efforts to bring about religious reforms in the kingdom of Judah. Therefore, the passing of the crown from Ahaz to Hezekiah signified a new era of righteousness and obedience to God's laws in the land. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of unrighteous rulers, God's plan and purpose will always prevail.

Theological Overview

Within the context of biblical theology, the verse regarding Ahaz's death and burial in Jerusalem raises questions about his spiritual standing and the favor of God upon him. The fact that Ahaz was not buried in the sepulchres of the kings of Israel may signify his failure to lead the nation in accordance with God's commands and his lack of faithfulness to the covenant. This contrasts with his son Hezekiah, who succeeded him as king and is remembered for his reforms to restore worship of the Lord in Jerusalem. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's will and the consequences of straying from His path. Word studies of terms like "slept with his fathers" and "reigned in his stead" can further illuminate the divine judgments and succession of leadership in the biblical narrative. Overall, the verse serves as a cautionary tale about the impact of one's choices on their legacy and spiritual inheritance.
