Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 28 - Verse 16

28:16
At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him.

Meaning

During the time of King Ahaz, the Kingdom of Judah was facing threats from other nations. In an attempt to protect his kingdom, King Ahaz made a strategic decision to seek help from the kings of Assyria. The Assyrian Empire was a powerful force in the region at that time, and King Ahaz believed that forming an alliance with them would provide the necessary military support to defend against their enemies. However, this decision to seek help from a foreign power instead of relying on God's protection ultimately led to negative consequences for the Kingdom of Judah. This verse serves as a reminder of the dangers of putting our trust in human strength instead of relying on God's providence and guidance.

Theological Overview

King Ahaz's decision to seek help from the kings of Assyria raises interesting theological questions about trust and dependence. In the context of this verse, we see Ahaz turning to a foreign power for assistance rather than trusting in God to deliver him from his enemies. This highlights a recurring theme in the Bible, where individuals and nations often struggle with the temptation to rely on human strength and wisdom rather than on God's sovereignty and provision.

The word 'send' in this verse also carries nuances of surrender and submission. By reaching out to the kings of Assyria, Ahaz was essentially placing his trust and fate in their hands, admitting his inability to overcome the challenges he faced on his own. This raises questions about the extent to which God's people should seek help from worldly powers and the potential consequences of aligning ourselves with those who do not share or value the same faith principles.

Overall, this verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of misplaced trust and the consequences of seeking help from sources that are not aligned with God's will. It prompts us to consider where we place our trust and where we turn for help in times of trouble, challenging us to always seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
