Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 27 - Verse 2

27:2
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did: howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.

Meaning

This verse from the book of 2 Chronicles chapter 27, verse 2, describes the reign of Jotham, King of Judah. Jotham followed in the footsteps of his father Uzziah, who was a good and righteous king. Jotham did what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord, just like his father had done. However, there was one key difference between Jotham and his father - he did not enter into the temple of the Lord. This may seem like a small detail, but in the context of the Israelite culture, it was significant. The temple was the central place of worship for the Israelites, and by not entering it, Jotham was distancing himself from the religious practices of his people. The verse also mentions that despite Jotham's righteousness, the people of Judah continued to engage in corrupt practices. This serves as a reminder that even when a leader is righteous, the actions of the people as a whole can still be influenced by sin and corruption.

Theological Overview

This verse from 2 Chronicles 27:2 describes the reign of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, who "did that which was right in the sight of the LORD." Despite following in his father's footsteps in many ways, Jotham did not enter into the temple of the LORD like his father had done. This choice to not enter the temple could be seen as a respect for God's boundaries and sanctity. It is interesting to note that while Jotham was personally following the ways of the Lord, the people continued to act corruptly, suggesting that even a righteous leader could not completely change the hearts of others. This verse invites us to reflect on the idea that true righteousness comes from a sincere heart and not just outward actions, and that even strong leadership cannot always prevent corruption among the people.

American Standard Version
