Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 25 - Verse 14

25:14
Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

Meaning

After successfully defeating the Edomites in battle, King Amaziah of Judah made a grave mistake by bringing back the gods of the children of Seir and worshipping them. This act of idolatry goes against the commandments of the Lord in the Bible, which strictly forbids the worship of any other gods besides the one true God. By bowing down and offering incense to these foreign gods, Amaziah showed a lack of faith and loyalty to God, leading to consequences for both himself and his kingdom. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of straying from true faith and the importance of staying true to God's commandments.

Theological Overview

The verse describes a moment in the life of King Amaziah, who had just defeated the Edomites in battle. After his victory, he brought back the idols of the children of Seir and worshipped them as his gods. This action of bowing down before foreign gods and burning incense to them was a clear violation of the first and second commandments given to Moses by God - "You shall have no other gods before me" and "You shall not make for yourself an idol." The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the danger of allowing victory or success to lead one away from worshipping the one true God. It serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of idolatry and the importance of remaining faithful to God in all circumstances. The word "gods" in this passage refers to the idols or false deities worshipped by the people of Seir, highlighting the folly of turning to man-made objects for divine guidance and protection.
