Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 23 - Verse 6

23:6
But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.

Meaning

In this verse, it is specified that only the priests and Levites are allowed to enter the house of the Lord, as they are considered holy and set apart for the service of God. The priests were responsible for performing the various rituals and sacrifices in the temple, while the Levites assisted them in their duties. This restriction on who can enter the house of the Lord emphasizes the importance of purity and reverence in approaching God's presence. The people were instructed to keep watch outside the temple, demonstrating their respect for the sacredness of the space. This verse highlights the strict guidelines in place for worship and the need for those who minister in the temple to be set apart for God's service. It serves as a reminder of the reverent attitude that should be maintained in approaching the presence of the Lord.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the distinction between the priests and the Levites is highlighted as being crucial in the context of the temple. The priests and Levites were assigned specific roles in the service of the Lord, and only they were permitted to enter the house of the Lord due to their consecration and holiness. The word "holy" used in this verse emphasizes the importance of purity and sanctification when approaching the presence of God. This directive reflects the Old Testament laws and regulations regarding the priesthood and the worship of God. It also serves as a reminder to the people to respect the boundaries set by God and to honor the sacredness of the temple. The concept of holiness and reverence for God's dwelling place is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the need for spiritual purity and obedience to God's commands.
