Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 21 - Verse 1

21:1
Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

Meaning

Upon the death of King Jehoshaphat, he was laid to rest in the city of David alongside his ancestors. This act was significant as it symbolized the continuity and connection of the royal lineage. The phrase "slept with his fathers" is a common biblical expression meaning that he had passed away and was now reunited in the afterlife with his forefathers. Jehoram, his son, then ascended to the throne in his place, carrying on the legacy of his father. This succession was crucial in maintaining the stability and order of the kingdom, ensuring a smooth transition of power. It also highlights the cyclical nature of rulership in ancient Israel, as one king would pass away and be replaced by his offspring. Jehoram's reign marked a new chapter in the history of Judah, as he took on the responsibility of leading his people with the wisdom and guidance passed down from his father.

Theological Overview

When exploring the theological interpretation of the verse "Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead," we can see the continuity of leadership in the lineage of the kings of Judah. The passing of Jehoshaphat signifies the end of his reign and the beginning of his son Jehoram's reign. This transition represents the cyclical nature of life and the divine appointment of kingship in Israel, as seen throughout the Old Testament.
