Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 17 - Verse 11

17:11
Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats.

Meaning

When some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and tribute silver, and the Arabians brought flocks of seven thousand and seven hundred rams and he goats, it was a sign of respect, diplomacy, and acknowledgment of Jehoshaphat's power and authority as the king of Judah. In ancient times, bringing gifts and tribute to a king was a common practice to show allegiance, seek favor, or establish alliances. The Philistines and the Arabians recognized Jehoshaphat's leadership and sought to maintain amicable relationships with him by offering valuable gifts. These offerings symbolized peace, goodwill, and cooperation between nations. The act of giving such lavish presents also showcased the wealth and prosperity of the givers. Additionally, this gesture was a way for the Philistines and the Arabians to ensure protection and security from Jehoshaphat's kingdom, as alliances often came with mutual defense agreements. Overall, this verse illustrates the political dynamics and customs of gift-giving and tribute in the ancient Near East.

Theological Overview

Here, we see an example of the provision and blessing that God provides for His people. The gifts of silver and livestock brought to Jehoshaphat by the Philistines and the Arabians were tangible signs of their recognition of Jehoshaphat's authority and the favor that God had bestowed upon him. The act of bringing presents and tribute was a common practice in the ancient world to honor and show allegiance to a powerful ruler. In this context, it also serves as a testimony to the sovereignty of God, who can move the hearts of even those outside of Israel to bring gifts and blessings to His chosen people. The sheer number of flocks mentioned - seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats - further emphasizes the abundance and lavishness of the blessings that God bestows upon those who walk in obedience and faith. This verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing and acknowledging God's hand in every good thing that we receive, and of the blessings that come from honoring Him with our lives.
