Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 15 - Verse 16

15:16
And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.

Meaning

According to this verse, King Asa took a decisive action against his own mother, Maachah, removing her from the position of queen because she had erected an idol in a grove. Asa did not tolerate idol worship and immediately took steps to remove the idol from his kingdom. He went as far as cutting down the idol, crushing it, and burning it at the brook Kidron. This action demonstrates Asa's commitment to upholding the worship of the one true God and his refusal to allow the spread of idolatry in his land, even if it meant taking action against his own family. Asa's boldness in tearing down the idol serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to one's faith and not allowing anything to come between oneself and God.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the importance of removing idolatry and false worship from the presence of God's people. King Asa's actions in removing his own mother from her position as queen and destroying the idol she had made serve as a powerful lesson on the seriousness of idolatry in the eyes of God. The act of cutting down, stamping, and burning the idol at the brook Kidron signifies a complete eradication of anything that hinders true worship of God. The word 'idol' in this verse refers to an image or object worshipped as a god, which conflicts with the commandment to have no other gods before the Lord. By taking such drastic measures, Asa demonstrates his commitment to upholding the true faith and worship of God, regardless of personal relationships or societal norms.

American Standard Version

And also Maacah, the mother of Asa the king, he removed from being queen, because she had made an abominable image for an Asherah; and Asa cut down her image, and made dust of it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.
