Book of 2 Chronicles - Chapter 10 - Verse 9

10:9
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

Meaning

In this verse, the people are asking for relief from the burdensome yoke that had been placed on them by Solomon's father. This request for advice shows a discontent among the people with the current state of affairs and a desire for a change in the policies that govern them. The mention of easing the yoke symbolizes a plea for less oppression and a lighter burden to bear. Solomon is seeking counsel from his advisors on how to respond to the people's request, indicating his concern for the well-being of his subjects and his willingness to consider their grievances. This verse highlights the importance of leadership listening to the needs of the people and taking action to address their concerns, ultimately fostering a harmonious relationship between the ruler and the ruled.

Theological Overview

In this verse, King Rehoboam seeks advice from his counselors on how to respond to the people asking for the yoke that his father, King Solomon, had placed upon them to be lightened. The term "yoke" is often used metaphorically in the Bible to represent oppression or burdens. By seeking counsel, Rehoboam demonstrates wisdom in seeking guidance before making a decision that will impact his kingdom. This verse also highlights the importance of seeking counsel from trusted advisors when faced with difficult decisions. It serves as a reminder for believers to seek Godly wisdom and advice before acting, as Proverbs 11:14 states, "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." Through this passage, readers are encouraged to consider the consequences of their actions and seek wise counsel before making decisions.
