Book of 1 Timothy - Chapter 3 - Verse 7

3:7
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Meaning

This verse highlights the importance of maintaining a good reputation among those who are not believers in order to avoid falling into the traps set by the devil. It emphasizes the need for individuals to uphold their integrity and moral character not only within their own community but also in the eyes of those outside of it. By having a good reputation among non-believers, individuals can more effectively serve as examples of God's love and grace. Failing to do so could lead to potential reproach and entrapment by the devil, hindering one's ability to spread the message of the gospel effectively. Therefore, believers are encouraged to be mindful of their actions and interactions with both believers and non-believers alike, in order to steer clear of the devil's schemes and maintain a positive witness for Christ.

Theological Overview

This verse from 1 Timothy 3:7 gives an important insight into the qualities required for those in leadership positions within the church. The phrase "a good report of them which are without" speaks to the need for church leaders to have a positive reputation among those outside the church as well as within. This is crucial as it not only reflects well on the leader personally, but also on the church as a whole. The idea behind this requirement is that church leaders should be individuals who are respected and esteemed by the broader community, serving as positive examples of Christian values and virtues. Failure to meet this standard can not only bring shame upon the leader but can also potentially lead them into the traps of the devil, as a damaged reputation can make them more susceptible to temptation and attacks. Therefore, church leaders must aim to live lives that are above reproach, demonstrating integrity and moral character in all aspects of their conduct.

American Standard Version

Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
