Book of 1 Thessalonians - Chapter 2 - Verse 13

2:13
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Meaning

The verse 'For this cause also thank we God without ceasing...' emphasizes the gratitude towards God for the believers' reception of His word. The Apostle Paul expresses his thankfulness to God for the Thessalonian believers because they did not merely accept the message as human words, but as the true word of God. This recognition of the divine nature of the message allowed the word of God to work effectively in the hearts of those who believed. By receiving the word as God's message, the believers experienced the transformative power of the word in their lives. This verse serves as a reminder to all believers to approach the Scriptures with reverence and faith, recognizing them as the living and powerful word of God that has the ability to change lives. As we read and study the word of God, let us do so with a heart full of gratitude and faith, knowing that it is through His word that our lives are transformed and our faith is strengthened.

Theological Overview

Paul's words to the Thessalonians in this passage highlight the transformative power of the Word of God. The key theological interpretation here lies in the distinction between viewing the word as coming from men versus as coming from God. When the Thessalonians heard the message preached by Paul and his companions, they recognized it not merely as human words but as the divine Word of God. This mindset enabled the Word to work effectively in their lives, producing change and growth in their faith. The concept of the Word of God being living and active, as described in Hebrews 4:12, is echoed in this verse, emphasizing its power to impact believers. The word 'effectually worketh' signifies that the Word of God is not passive but actively operating within those who believe. Through this lens, believers today are encouraged to receive and engage with the Word of God as a living and powerful force that can bring about spiritual transformation in their lives.

American Standard Version

And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us the word of the message, [even the word] of God, ye accepted [it] not [as] the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe.
