Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 28 - Verse 6

28:6
And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

Meaning

During Saul's reign as king of Israel, he sought guidance from the Lord on various occasions. However, in this particular instance, when Saul inquired of the Lord, he did not receive a response through dreams, the Urim (a sacred object used for discerning God's will), or through prophets. This lack of communication from the Lord was likely a consequence of Saul's disobedience and disregard for God's commands. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God in order to receive His guidance and blessings. It also highlights the consequences of straying from God's path and the importance of seeking Him earnestly. This verse demonstrates that even a king as powerful as Saul was not exempt from the consequences of his actions and that God's response to his inquiries was directly impacted by his obedience and faithfulness.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of 1 Samuel, we see Saul, the king of Israel, seeking guidance from the Lord but receiving no response. The passage mentions that the Lord did not answer Saul through dreams, the Urim (a form of divination using stones), or prophets. This highlights a period where God chose not to speak to Saul through traditional means. This lack of communication from God is often interpreted as a sign of judgment or disapproval towards Saul and his actions. The verse serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences that can come from disobedience or turning away from God. It also underscores the importance of seeking God's guidance in all aspects of life. Despite Saul's efforts to inquire of the Lord, his lack of response demonstrates the severity of the situation and the need for true repentance and seeking after God's will.
