Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 28 - Verse 14

And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

Meaning

In this passage from the Bible, Saul is depicted seeking guidance from a medium, despite it being forbidden in the Old Testament. When the medium sees a spirit rising up, she describes it as an old man covered with a mantle. Saul, upon hearing this description, realizes that the spirit is Samuel. Despite his shock and fear, Saul humbles himself before the spirit of Samuel, bowing with his face to the ground. This moment signifies Saul's acknowledgment of Samuel's authority and wisdom, even in death. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of Saul's actions and the severity of seeking guidance from sources outside of God's will. Through Saul's reaction, the verse highlights the importance of humility and respect in the face of divine presence and guidance.

Theological Overview

In this passage, Saul is consulting a medium to try and communicate with the deceased prophet Samuel. The theological interpretation of this verse is that Saul's decision to seek communication with the dead is in direct violation of God's commands. Throughout the Bible, consulting mediums and necromancers is condemned as an abomination to the Lord. The word study of this verse reveals that Saul's actions are rooted in his desperation and lack of faith in God. By seeking out a medium to communicate with Samuel, Saul is demonstrating his lack of trust in God's plan and guidance. The word "mantle" in this verse is significant as it symbolizes Samuel's identity as a prophet of God. Saul's recognition of Samuel through his description also highlights the supernatural nature of the encounter. Ultimately, this passage serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of seeking guidance from sources other than God.
