Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 25 - Verse 34

25:34
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

Meaning

In this verse from the Old Testament, we see David expressing gratitude to God for intervening and preventing him from taking vengeance against the wealthy but foolish man named Nabal. David acknowledges that if it were not for God's protection, there would have been a swift and severe consequence for Nabal's disrespect towards him. The phrase "any that pisseth against the wall" is a euphemism used in ancient times to refer to males, emphasizing that there would have been no male descendants left alive by the morning if Nabal had not been spared. This verse serves as a reminder of God's power to protect and intervene on behalf of His chosen people, even in the face of injustice and disrespect. It also highlights the importance of trusting in God's timing and wisdom, as He alone has the ultimate authority to judge and mete out justice.

Theological Overview

By invoking the name of the LORD God of Israel, David emphasizes the importance of divine intervention in preventing him from taking matters into his own hands. The phrase "pisseth against the wall" is a colloquial expression in ancient Hebrew society that refers to males, highlighting the brutal fate that would have befallen Nabal and his household if David had not been restrained by God. This verse underscores the importance of patience and trust in God's providence, even in the face of injustice and insult. It serves as a reminder of the power of divine protection and the consequences of hasty actions driven by anger and revenge. As readers reflect on this verse, they are encouraged to emulate David's faith and reliance on God's guidance in all circumstances.

American Standard Version

For in very deed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man-child.
