Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 24 - Verse 10

24:10
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.

Meaning

These words spoken by David to King Saul reflect a story of mercy and righteousness. Saul, who was once anointed by the Lord as king, had turned against David and sought his life. In a moment of vulnerability, David had the opportunity to kill Saul while he was sleeping in a cave. However, David chose mercy instead of revenge, sparing Saul's life out of respect for him as the Lord's anointed. This act of mercy demonstrated David's reverence for God's anointed leader, even in the midst of personal danger. It also serves as a powerful example of forgiveness and humility, showing that even when faced with the opportunity for vengeance, we should choose to honor God's appointed leaders and show mercy to those who wrong us. David's actions in this verse remind us of the importance of faith, obedience, and grace in our relationship with both God and our fellow believers.
