Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 2 - Verse 25

2:25
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

Meaning

This verse highlights the importance of recognizing the gravity of sinning against the Lord. It compares the consequences of sinning against another person with the consequences of sinning against God. The verse emphasizes that when one person wrongs another, there is an earthly judge to mediate and impart justice. However, when someone sins against the Lord, there is no intermediary to plead on their behalf. The verse also illustrates how the individuals in question did not heed the warnings of their father because the Lord had already decreed their impending judgment. This serves as a cautionary tale about the severity of divine retribution and the need for repentance and remorse for one's actions. Overall, this verse underscores the importance of recognizing and repenting for sins committed against the Lord, as there is no one to intercede on our behalf when we stand guilty before Him.

Theological Overview

This verse highlights the distinction between sinning against another person and sinning against the Lord. It points out that when one man sins against another, the judge can adjudicate the matter. However, when a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede on his behalf? This raises the importance of seeking forgiveness and atonement from God for spiritual transgressions. The lack of repentance and disobedience to the father's warnings in the passage indicates a rejection of divine authority, ultimately leading to divine judgment. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores the need for individuals to acknowledge their sins before God, seek forgiveness, and turn away from disobedience to avoid facing the consequences of Divine judgment. This passage serves as a reminder of the significance of maintaining a righteous relationship with the Lord in order to avoid the consequences of spiritual disobedience.

American Standard Version

If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against Jehovah, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because Jehovah was minded to slay them.
