Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 17 - Verse 6

17:6
And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

Meaning

In this verse, the mention of "greaves of brass upon his legs" and a "target of brass between his shoulders" refers to the armor worn by a warrior. Greaves were designed to protect the lower legs, while a target (or breastplate) was worn to protect the vital organs in the chest and back. The choice of brass for these pieces of armor is significant, as brass was a prized material known for its strength and durability in battle. By describing the armor in such detail, the verse emphasizes the preparation and protection of the warrior as they go into battle, highlighting the importance of being equipped with the necessary tools and defenses to face the challenges ahead. This verse can serve as a reminder for believers to always be prepared and equipped with the armor of God in order to stand firm in their faith amidst spiritual battles and trials.

Theological Overview

The verse "And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders." from the Bible describes the attire of a warrior. The term "greaves" refers to a piece of armor that protected the legs, particularly the shins. The fact that these greaves were made of brass indicates that they were strong and durable, providing adequate protection in battle. Additionally, the mention of a "target of brass between his shoulders" suggests that the warrior wore a protective piece of armor on his back to shield him from attacks. This attention to detail in the description of the warrior's armor highlights the significance of being well-equipped and prepared for spiritual battles as well. As believers, we too must put on the whole armor of God to stand against the schemes of the devil, as outlined in Ephesians 6:10-18. Just as the warrior in this verse was protected by brass armor, we are called to arm ourselves with God's truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God to withstand the forces of evil.
