Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 17 - Verse 58

17:58
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

Meaning

When Saul asks David about his lineage, David humbly responds that he is the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, Saul's servant. This exchange between Saul and David is significant because it highlights the contrast between their backgrounds and positions in society. Saul, as the king of Israel, comes from a noble and prominent family, while David, a young shepherd boy, hails from a more humble upbringing. Despite this difference, David's response reflects his loyalty to his family and his respect for Saul's authority. By acknowledging his father's identity, David also affirms his own sense of identity and connection to his roots. This verse serves as a reminder of the diversity and complexity of human relationships, as well as the importance of humility and respect in interactions with others.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from the book of 1 Samuel is that it highlights the humility and faithfulness of David, who would later become King of Israel. When Saul asked David about his lineage, David replied that he was the son of Jesse from Bethlehem. By referring to himself as the son of a servant, David shows his humility and respect for his family's position. Despite being anointed as the future king of Israel, David does not boast or try to elevate himself above his current status. This displays his trust in God's timing and plan for his life, as well as his willingness to serve in whatever capacity he is placed. The word study on "servant" in this context can reveal the honor and respect that David holds for his father Jesse and demonstrates his commitment to fulfilling his duties with humility and loyalty.
