Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 17 - Verse 39

17:39
And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

Meaning

This verse demonstrates the importance of being prepared and equipped for the tasks that lie ahead. David, a young shepherd who would later become a great king, had been chosen to face the giant Goliath in battle. When King Saul offered his armor and sword to David, he hesitated and declined. Despite the protection and weaponry that Saul provided, David felt uncomfortable and unprepared as he had not yet tested or proven them. David recognized the significance of having tried and tested equipment, as he knew that using unfamiliar tools would put him at a disadvantage in the upcoming battle. Thus, he made the decision to trust in his own skills and rely on what he knew best - his shepherd's sling and stones. This story serves as a reminder to always be well-prepared, practice with the tools that are available, and have confidence in one's abilities when facing challenges.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse can focus on the importance of being properly equipped for spiritual battles. In this passage, David is preparing to face Goliath, a formidable enemy who represents the forces of evil. However, David realizes that he cannot rely on Saul's armor or weapons because he has not tested them himself; they do not fit him, and he does not have experience using them. This can be seen as a metaphor for the need to rely on God's provision and guidance in times of trial and temptation. Just as David could not defeat Goliath with Saul's tools, believers must rely on the spiritual weapons of faith, prayer, and the word of God to overcome the challenges they face. By trusting in God's strength and wisdom, we can face any obstacle with confidence, knowing that we are equipped for victory.
