Book of 1 Samuel - Chapter 14 - Verse 33

14:33
Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

Meaning

In 1 Samuel 14:33-34, we see Saul being informed by the people that they have sinned against the Lord by eating with the blood. This refers to the prohibition in Leviticus 17:10-12 against consuming blood, as it is seen as the life of the creature and is reserved for atonement. When Saul hears this, he acknowledges their transgression and instructs them to roll a great stone to him. This action was likely a symbolic gesture to show repentance and a turning away from their sin. By obeying Saul's command, the people were demonstrating their desire to make amends and seek forgiveness for their disobedience to God's laws. This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of following God's commandments and seeking forgiveness when we fall short. It highlights the need for repentance and shows how we can make things right with God through our actions and humility.

Theological Overview

When Saul is told that the people have sinned against the LORD by eating with the blood, he responds by accusing them of transgression and commands them to roll a great stone to him that day. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores the importance of obedience to God's commandments. Eating with the blood was considered a violation of the dietary laws given by God to the Israelites. By partaking in this forbidden practice, the people were not only disobeying God but also disrespecting His holiness and authority. Saul's reaction highlights the seriousness of sin in the eyes of the LORD and the need for swift action to rectify the situation. This incident serves as a reminder to believers to be vigilant in following God's word and to promptly address any transgressions that may arise in their lives. By understanding the theological implications of this verse, we can deepen our reverence for God and strive to live in accordance with His righteous standards.
