Theological Overview

The phrase "tarry until thou have weaned him" signifies a period after childbirth when a child is no longer dependent on breastfeeding. Elkanah's assurance that "only the LORD establish his word" suggests a belief in God's providence and sovereignty over their son's life. By obeying Elkanah's advice, Hannah demonstrates her trust in God's plan for Samuel. The act of weaning in this context may also symbolize the transition from infancy to a future dedicated to serving God, as Samuel will go on to become a great prophet and leader in Israel.
