Meaning

This verse, found in the book of 2nd Chronicles in the Old Testament, is a prophecy regarding the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. The "house, which is high" refers to the temple, which was regarded as a place of worship and reverence. The verse predicts that the temple will be destroyed to the point where passersby will be astonished and confused as to why such devastation has occurred. The destruction of the temple is seen as a punishment from the Lord for the sins of the people and their disobedience. The onlookers will question why the Lord has allowed such destruction to happen to the land and the temple. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of remaining faithful to His teachings. It also highlights the power and authority that God holds over His people and the consequences of straying from His path.

Theological Overview

Within the theological interpretation of 2 Chronicles 7:21, the verse is seen as a prophetic warning towards the people of Israel. The imagery of a high house symbolizes the nation of Israel, which was exalted and favored by the Lord. The astonishment and hissing of those who pass by represent the judgement that would come upon the nation because of their disobedience and idolatry. The people's questioning of why the Lord had brought such destruction upon them reflects their ignorance of their sins and their lack of understanding of God's justice. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of remaining faithful to His commandments. In a word study, the term "hiss" carries the connotation of disapproval or scorn, indicating the severity of the people's reaction to the devastation wrought upon the land and the house of the Lord. This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience and faithfulness in order to avoid the judgement of the Lord.
