Book of 1 Kings - Chapter 9 - Verse 7

9:7
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

Meaning

This verse from the book of 1 Kings in the Bible speaks to the consequences of disobedience and unfaithfulness to God. In this passage, God is expressing his anger towards the Israelites for turning away from Him and worshipping false idols. The verse foretells that as a result of their actions, Israel will be removed from the land that God had given them, and the holy temple that had been built for His name would be cast out of His sight. This signifies a severe punishment for their sins and a breaking of the covenant between God and the Israelites. The mention of Israel becoming a "proverb and a byword among all people" further emphasizes the shame and disgrace that will befall them as a result of their disobedience. This verse serves as a warning about the importance of staying faithful to God and the consequences that can follow if one strays from His will.

Theological Overview

Here, in this passage, God is expressing his divine judgment on Israel for their disobedience and idolatry. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the consequences of turning away from God and breaking the covenant relationship. The language used in the text emphasizes the severity of God's judgment, as he speaks of cutting off Israel from the land he had given them and casting out the house that was hallowed for his name. The word "proverb" suggests that Israel will become a cautionary tale, a symbol of what happens when a nation forsakes God. Similarly, the term "byword" indicates that Israel will be the subject of mockery and scorn among all peoples. This verse serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God's commands, as well as the consequences that come from straying from his will.
