Book of 1 Kings - Chapter 3 - Verse 23

3:23
Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.

Meaning

In this verse, we see the wise judgment of King Solomon as he listens to a dispute between two women claiming to be the mother of a child. The women both assert that the living child is theirs and the dead child belongs to the other. However, King Solomon sees through their deception and suggests a solution to the dilemma: he offers to split the living child in half to give each woman half. The true mother immediately shows her love and compassion by offering to give up her claim to the child in order to spare its life. This act of selflessness reveals her as the real mother, as no mother would willingly harm her own child. The verse highlights King Solomon's wisdom in resolving the dispute and showcases the power of a mother's love and sacrifice for her child.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a classic example of a theological interpretation known as the judgment of Solomon. The two women who come before King Solomon each claim that a living child is theirs, while the other's child is dead. Solomon's response to suggest cutting the living child in two so that each mother can have a share shows his wisdom in discerning the true mother - the one who is willing to sacrifice her own desires for the well-being of the child. This story is often cited as an example of Solomon's God-given wisdom and his ability to see through lies and deception. The word study of 'dead' and 'living' in this context underscores the importance of discerning between what is true and what is false, and the significance of recognizing the value of life over selfish desires. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of righteousness and justice in the eyes of God.
