Book of 1 Kings - Chapter 20 - Verse 9

20:9
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.

Meaning

In this verse, the king of Israel responds to the message sent by Benhadad, the king of Aram. The king of Israel agrees to fulfill the initial request made by Benhadad, but he chooses to refuse a specific request that Benhadad had made. This shows that the king of Israel was willing to negotiate and compromise, while also asserting his boundaries. The messengers then deliver this message back to Benhadad, indicating that they were respectful of the king of Israel's decision and were responsible in carrying out their task. This verse highlights the importance of communication, diplomacy, and standing firm in one's principles.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of 1 Kings, we see a theological interpretation regarding the importance of obedience to God's commands. The context of this passage involves the king of Israel, who initially followed the instructions of the prophet Elisha but later hesitated to fully comply with his commands. The theological lesson we can draw from this verse is the idea that partial obedience is not enough when it comes to following God's will. The king's reluctance to fully commit to carrying out God's instructions resulted in consequences for himself and the people he ruled. This serves as a reminder for believers today to wholeheartedly obey God's word without reservation or compromise. Additionally, a word study of the term "messengers" in this verse highlights the significance of communication and delivering messages faithfully. The messengers of Benhadad were responsible for conveying the king's response to Elisha, which ultimately led to the consequences that followed. This emphasizes the importance of being diligent and truthful in our words and actions, as they can have far-reaching effects.
