20:35
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.

Meaning

In this verse, a certain man of the sons of the prophets asked his neighbor to strike him in the name of the Lord, but the neighbor refused to do so. This incident raises questions about the interpretation of the word of the Lord and the actions that individuals are willing to take in response to it. Some scholars believe that the man who requested to be struck was testing his neighbor's obedience to the word of the Lord, while others suggest that he may have been seeking to atone for his sins through physical punishment. The neighbor's refusal to carry out the request could be seen as an act of compassion or as a demonstration of his understanding that the word of the Lord should not be used to inflict harm on others. Overall, this verse highlights the complexities of following divine guidance and the importance of discernment and compassion in interpreting and acting upon God's word.

Theological Overview

With regards to the theological interpretation of this passage, some scholars suggest that it serves as a metaphor for the importance of humility and obedience in the life of a believer. The request for the man to be smitten may symbolize the need for discipline or correction from God, while the refusal to do so can be seen as a reflection of the reluctance to carry out God's will. Additionally, the phrase "in the word of the LORD" highlights the authority and command of God in the lives of His people. Word studies on the term "smite" reveal that it can have various meanings, including to strike, afflict, or defeat. This further emphasizes the idea of divine discipline and the importance of submitting to God's will. Overall, this verse challenges believers to consider their willingness to obey God, even when faced with difficult or seemingly unreasonable commands.
