Book of 1 Kings - Chapter 20 - Verse 28

20:28
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

Meaning

This verse from the Bible, specifically from the book of 1 Kings, illustrates a powerful message delivered by a man of God to the king of Israel. The man of God conveys God's response to the Syrians, who had claimed that the Lord was only the God of the hills and not of the valleys. In response, God declares that he will deliver a great multitude into the hands of the king of Israel to demonstrate his power and authority over all aspects of the land, both high and low. This verse serves as a reminder of God's omnipotence and his ability to reign over every corner of the earth. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing God as the ultimate authority and understanding that his power knows no bounds. By delivering victory to the king of Israel, God not only proves his supremacy but also ensures that his presence is acknowledged by all.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a man of God delivering a message to the king of Israel on behalf of the LORD. The theological interpretation of this passage reveals the importance of acknowledging God as the one true God in all aspects of life, not just in specific situations. The Syrians had wrongly believed that the LORD was only God of the hills and not of the valleys, showing a limited understanding of God's power and sovereignty. However, the message from the man of God emphasizes that God is indeed the God of all places and situations, and he will deliver victory to the people of Israel to demonstrate his authority and presence. This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God's sovereignty and to recognize his power in every aspect of our lives, not just in the situations where we may feel comfortable or familiar.

American Standard Version
