Book of 1 John - Chapter 5 - Verse 16

5:16
If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

Meaning

This verse from the First Epistle of John discusses the concept of sin and prayer within the Christian community. It highlights the importance of believers supporting one another in their spiritual journey. The verse emphasizes the power of prayer in helping fellow believers who have sinned. It suggests that by praying for others, one can help bring them back to the righteous path and save them from spiritual death. However, the verse also mentions a sin that leads to death, implying that not all sins can be forgiven through prayer alone. This distinction serves as a reminder of the gravity of sin and the need for repentance and forgiveness. Overall, this verse encourages Christians to pray for and support one another in times of spiritual struggle, while also recognizing the consequences of unrepentant sin.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse from 1 John 5:16 regarding sin unto death and sin not unto death, it is important to consider the context in which this passage is situated. The apostle John is addressing the issue of interceding for fellow believers who have fallen into sin. The distinction between sin unto death and sin not unto death has been a point of debate among theologians. Some believe that sin unto death refers to a willful, unrepentant sin that leads to spiritual death, while sin not unto death refers to sins that may be repented of and forgiven through prayer and intercession. This interpretation underscores the significance of prayer in the life of believers and the power of interceding on behalf of others. Moreover, the verse highlights the responsibility of believers to support and encourage one another in their walk with God, showing compassion and a desire for their spiritual restoration.

American Standard Version
