Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 9 - Verse 21

9:21
To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

Meaning

This verse, found in 1 Corinthians 9:21, is Paul's explanation of his approach to sharing the gospel with different people. Paul is emphasizing the importance of being culturally sensitive and adaptable when spreading the message of Christ. He is willing to meet people where they are, whether they are Jews under the law or Gentiles without the law. Paul clarifies that although he is not bound by the law like the Jews, he is still under the law of Christ. This means that he follows the teachings and example of Jesus in order to effectively reach those who do not have the same background or beliefs as him. By being flexible in his approach, Paul aims to connect with a wider audience and ultimately bring more people to faith in Christ.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse is that the apostle Paul is discussing his mission to reach different groups of people with the message of Christ. The phrase "To them that are without law, as without law" could refer to Paul's willingness to adapt his approach to different cultural contexts in order to effectively communicate the Gospel. By stating that he was "not without law to God, but under the law to Christ," Paul emphasizes his commitment to living in accordance with the teachings of Jesus. This could be seen as a reminder to Christians to prioritize following Christ's example and teachings above all else, even when engaging with those who may not be familiar with the Jewish Law. Overall, this verse highlights the importance of contextualizing the message of salvation in order to effectively reach diverse audiences with the love and truth of Christ.
