Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 9 - Verse 18

9:18
What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

Meaning

Paul, in this verse, is addressing the Corinthians and explaining the motivation behind his decision to preach the gospel free of charge. He stresses that his reward is in making the message of Christ accessible to all, without attaching any financial burden to it. By offering the gospel for free, Paul demonstrates his commitment to sharing the good news of Christ purely out of love and devotion, rather than seeking personal gain. He wants to avoid any appearance of abusing his authority as an apostle by profiting from preaching the gospel. This verse emphasizes the importance of sincerity and integrity in spreading the message of Christ, highlighting that the true reward lies in sharing the gospel selflessly and without ulterior motives. It serves as a reminder for believers to prioritize the purity and power of the gospel message above personal gain or recognition.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the importance of practicing humility and selflessness in spreading the message of the gospel. The apostle Paul is expressing his commitment to sharing the good news of Christ without seeking personal gain or profit. By offering the gospel without charge, Paul avoids the temptation to misuse the power and authority entrusted to him by God. This verse highlights the idea that the gospel should be freely given, as salvation itself is a gift from God that cannot be earned through human efforts or transactions. Additionally, the phrase "that I abuse not my power in the gospel" serves as a reminder to all believers to use their spiritual gifts and influence in a way that glorifies God and serves others, rather than exploiting them for personal advantage.

American Standard Version

What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel without charge, so as not to use to the full my right in the gospel.
