Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 7 - Verse 15

7:15
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.

Meaning

In this verse, believers are reminded that if an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave the marriage, the believer is not obligated to force them to stay. The verse emphasizes that a brother or sister in Christ is not bound in such situations and is free to let the unbeliever depart. This does not mean that divorce is encouraged, but rather, it acknowledges that sometimes relationships with non-believers may become untenable. The ultimate goal is to pursue peace, as God has called us to live in harmony and tranquility. It serves as a reminder that while marriage is sacred, the well-being and peace of mind of believers should not be sacrificed in order to hold on to a relationship with someone who does not share their faith. By allowing the unbeliever to depart peacefully, believers can continue to live according to the calling of God to live in peace and harmony with others.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the apostle Paul addresses a situation where a believer is married to an unbeliever who chooses to leave the marriage. Paul advises that if the unbelieving partner decides to depart, the believer should let them go. The phrase "A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases" implies that the believer is not bound to hold the unbeliever to the marriage if they choose to leave. This does not mean that the believer is free to pursue divorce at will, but rather that they are not obligated to try to force the unbeliever to stay in the marriage against their will. Paul emphasizes that God has called us to live in peace, indicating that in situations where an unbeliever chooses to leave, it may be more peaceful for the believer to allow them to depart rather than to try to force them to stay in the relationship. This verse highlights the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in relationships, even when faced with difficult circumstances.

American Standard Version
