Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 7 - Verse 12

7:12
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

Meaning

Within the context of the Bible, this verse is found in 1 Corinthians 7:12-16, where the apostle Paul addresses the issue of believers being married to unbelievers. In this particular verse, Paul is speaking from his own insight and not quoting a direct command from the Lord. He advises that if a Christian man is married to a non-believing woman who is willing to live with him, he should not divorce her. This is because Paul encourages believers to maintain peace and harmony in their relationships, even if their spouses do not share the same faith. By choosing to stay in the marriage and work on building a loving and respectful relationship, the Christian husband can be a positive influence on his non-believing wife and possibly lead her to faith in God. This verse emphasizes the importance of love, forgiveness, and patience in marital relationships, even when facing challenges such as differing beliefs.

Theological Overview

Within the context of 1 Corinthians 7:12, the Apostle Paul is addressing a specific situation where one spouse is a believer in Christ while the other is not. The phrase "But to the rest speak I, not the Lord" indicates Paul is offering his own guidance on this matter, as it is not directly addressed in the teachings of Jesus. Paul advises that if a believer's spouse is not a follower of Christ but is willing to stay in the marriage, then the believer should not seek a divorce. This is in line with the broader biblical teachings on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of unity within a marital relationship. The emphasis here is on the believer's commitment to love, patience, and grace towards their unbelieving spouse, with the hope that through their example, the unbelieving spouse may come to faith.

American Standard Version

But to the rest say I, not the Lord: If any brother hath an unbelieving wife, and she is content to dwell with him, let him not leave her.
