16:16
That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.

Meaning

This verse is a call to submission and cooperation within the Christian community. The apostle Paul urges believers to submit themselves to those who work alongside him in spreading the message of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes the importance of unity and teamwork in fulfilling the mission of the church. By submitting to those who are leading and serving in the church, believers can contribute to the overall work of spreading the gospel and building up the body of Christ. The verse also highlights the value of everyone's contribution, no matter how big or small. It encourages believers to support and labor together with fellow Christians for the common goal of advancing the kingdom of God. Ultimately, this verse emphasizes the significance of humility, cooperation, and service in the Christian faith.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse focuses on the theme of submission within the Christian community. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, is encouraging believers to submit themselves not only to those in leadership positions but also to fellow laborers who are working alongside them in furthering the gospel. This attitude of submission reflects the humility and unity that should characterize the body of Christ, as each member plays a vital role in the work of the ministry. In addition, the concept of submission underscores the importance of serving one another with a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

Furthermore, a word study of the term "laboureth" can provide additional insight into the verse. The Greek word used here, "synergeo," conveys the idea of working together or cooperating harmoniously. This highlights the collaborative nature of Christian service, emphasizing the importance of individuals laboring together in unity to accomplish the mission of spreading the gospel and building up the church. By submitting to and supporting one another in the work of the ministry, believers can demonstrate Christ-like love and advance God's kingdom on earth.
