Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 14 - Verse 22

14:22
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Meaning

This verse from Corinthians talks about the purpose of tongues and prophesying within the Christian faith. It states that speaking in tongues is a sign not for believers, but for non-believers. When someone speaks in tongues, it is meant to be a miraculous sign that can help convince those who do not believe in the teachings of Christianity. Prophesying, on the other hand, is not intended for non-believers but for those who already believe in the message of the Gospel. Prophesying is seen as a way to strengthen the faith of believers, provide guidance, and offer encouragement. In essence, tongues are a tool for evangelism, to reach out to those who have not yet accepted the Christian faith, while prophesying is meant to edify and build up the body of believers.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, the distinction between the use of tongues and prophesying is highlighted. The verse emphasizes that tongues are a sign for unbelievers, as speaking in tongues can serve as a powerful and mystical demonstration of divine power. This sign can potentially attract non-believers to the faith. On the other hand, prophesying is described as a gift that primarily benefits believers, as it provides guidance, comfort, and edification to those who already have faith. Prophesying involves the communication of God's messages, which can strengthen the faith of believers and help them navigate their spiritual journey. Therefore, while speaking in tongues may seem nonsensical to non-believers, prophesying is intended to provide spiritual nourishment and direction to those who already believe. Both gifts are important in the context of spreading the message of God but serve different purposes in reaching different audiences.

American Standard Version

Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying [is for a sign], not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.
