Book of 1 Corinthians - Chapter 10 - Verse 28

10:28
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

Meaning

This verse from 1 Corinthians 10:28 addresses the issue of eating food that has been sacrificed to idols. In the cultural context of the time, some food was first offered to idols before being sold in the marketplace. The Apostle Paul cautions against eating such food if someone informs you that it was offered to idols. He emphasizes that it is important to consider the conscience of others, as well as our own, when making such decisions. By abstaining from eating food sacrificed to idols, we show respect for the person who informed us and avoid causing them to stumble in their faith. Ultimately, the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord, and our actions should be guided by our desire to honor Him in all that we do. This verse reminds us to be mindful of how our choices may impact others and to prioritize upholding our conscience for the glory of God.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, the theological interpretation revolves around the concept of conscience and the significance of not causing another believer to stumble. The instruction to abstain from eating meat sacrificed to idols stems from the concern for the spiritual well-being of others. By refraining from partaking in such food when informed of its idolatrous origin, one demonstrates love and consideration for those who may struggle with their conscience. The verse also emphasizes the overarching ownership of the earth by the Lord, highlighting the supremacy of God over all creation. This theological insight underscores the importance of living in a manner that respects both God's sovereignty and the convictions of fellow believers. By upholding these principles, individuals contribute to the maintenance of a harmonious and supportive community of faith.
