Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 26 - Verse 14

26:14
And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.

Meaning

In this verse from Nehemiah 11:17, the casting of lots is used to determine the allocation of land for two individuals, Shelemiah and his son Zechariah. The process of casting lots was a common practice in ancient times to make decisions impartially and leave the outcome up to chance, rather than human manipulation. Shelemiah received the lot eastward, indicating the portion of land that was designated for him. For Zechariah, his son, a wise counselor, they cast lots again, and his portion of land was determined to be northward. This verse highlights the importance of using impartial methods for decision-making, as well as the recognition of individuals' skills and qualities, such as wisdom in the case of Zechariah. The use of lots in this context serves to demonstrate a fair and equitable distribution of resources among the people, emphasizing the importance of justice and fairness in the community.

Theological Overview

One interpretation of this verse from the book of Nehemiah is that the casting of lots was a common practice in ancient Israel to determine the allocation of land or responsibilities. In this instance, the lot fell to Shelemiah eastward, symbolizing a specific portion of land that was designated to him. Similarly, Zechariah, his son, was designated a portion of land northward through the casting of lots. The use of the term "wise counsellor" to describe Zechariah suggests that he was known for his wisdom and ability to give sound advice, making him a valuable asset to the community. This verse demonstrates the reliance on divine guidance and the belief in the sovereignty of God in the allocation of resources and responsibilities among the people of Israel. Through careful examination of the historical context and word studies, we can gain insights into the significance of casting lots and the roles assigned to individuals based on divine intervention.
