Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 21 - Verse 3

21:3
And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

Meaning

In this verse, Joab questions King David's decision to take a census of the people of Israel. Joab expresses his concern that such an action may lead to a transgression against God. By asking why the king wants to count the people, Joab implies that the population should only be measured for military or administrative purposes, under God's direction. He suggests that increasing the number of people could potentially bring about negative consequences for Israel. Joab's response reflects a deep-seated reverence for God and a belief that the king should act in accordance with divine will. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith and obedience in the face of worldly temptations and ambitions.

Theological Overview

Joab's response to King David's decision to count the people of Israel reflects a theological interpretation centered on the importance of trust in God's provision and sovereignty. By invoking the name of the LORD, Joab acknowledges that the ultimate increase of the people comes from God alone. He questions the necessity of the king's command, highlighting the fact that all the people ultimately belong to the king and serve him. Therefore, Joab questions the king's motives in wanting to count the people, as it may lead to a trespass against Israel. This response emphasizes the theme of obedience to God's will and trusting in His plans, rather than seeking validation or security in counting numbers. In a broader theological context, this verse also underscores the danger of human pride and the importance of humility before God. It serves as a reminder to rely on God's abundance and faithfulness rather than on our own efforts or calculations.

American Standard Version
