Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 13 - Verse 13

13:13
So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.

Meaning

When David decided to bring the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem, he encountered a setback when Uzzah died while trying to steady the ark. This incident made David reconsider his approach, and instead of bringing the ark directly to the city of David, he decided to take a different course of action. David brought the ark to the house of Obededom the Gittite, a Levite, to ensure proper handling and reverence. By doing this, David sought to avoid any further mishaps and show respect for the holy object. Obededom's household was blessed during the time the ark stayed there, leading David to later attempt to bring the ark to Jerusalem successfully. This decision reflects David's humility and reverence for God's presence, as he prioritized the safety and sanctity of the ark over his own desires.

Theological Overview

David's decision to not bring the ark home to himself to the city of David, but rather to place it in the house of Obededom the Gittite, carries deep theological implications. This action reveals David's reverence for the holiness of the ark, as he wanted to ensure it was in a place where it would be properly respected and cared for. Obededom the Gittite was a non-Israelite, yet David entrusted the ark to him, showing that God's presence was not limited to the chosen people of Israel. This highlights the inclusivity of God's kingdom and His desire to dwell among all peoples. The word "home" in this verse can also be interpreted as a symbol of the inner spiritual sanctuary within each believer, reminding us of the importance of setting aside a sacred space for God in our hearts. Ultimately, David's actions serve as a reminder of the need for reverence, humility, and inclusivity in our relationship with God.
