Book of 1 Chronicles - Chapter 13 - Verse 10

13:10
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.

Meaning

One of the key lessons to take away from this verse is the importance of following God's instructions and respecting His holiness. Uzza's intentions may have been good when he reached out to steady the ark of the covenant, but his actions went against God's explicit command that only the Levites were to touch the ark and carry it using poles inserted through rings on its sides. By disregarding this command, Uzza displayed a lack of reverence for the sacred object and incurred the anger of the Lord. This incident serves as a reminder that God expects obedience and reverence from His people, and that there are consequences for disobedience. It also highlights the importance of understanding and following God's instructions as a way to honor and respect His authority. Uzza's tragic fate serves as a sobering example of the seriousness of disobedience and the need to approach God with humility and reverence.

One possible theological interpretation of the verse could be that it serves as a reminder of the holiness of God and the importance of following His instructions. Uzza's actions in reaching out to steady the ark seemingly showed irreverence towards the sacred object, leading to the Lord's anger being kindled against him. This incident highlights the seriousness of obeying God's word and not taking His commands lightly. Furthermore, it may also symbolize the consequences of presumptuous behavior and the need for humility before God. Word studies on terms such as "anger" and "put his hand" could shed further light on the nuances of this particular passage, providing insights into the underlying meanings and implications of Uzza's actions.
